Gum Disease Therapy
According to a recent study, 75% of Americans over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease. It hides in your mouth, destroys your teeth and gums, and can even lead to heart attack or stroke. If caught in the early stages, gum disease can be reversed with simple, non-surgical therapies.
Gum disease is the number-one cause of tooth loss for American adults. Causes of gum disease include plaque buildup, heredity, and lifestyle choices. Plaque, the sticky, colorless substance produced by normal oral bacteria, can build up in the spaces between your teeth and at or below the gum line. Bacteria emitted by plaque can eat away the bond between teeth and gums, causing pockets where more bacteria and plaque collect until gum disease eventually develops.
Because we inadvertently ingest oral bacteria, gum disease can lead to more serious overall health concerns. A study done by the American Academy of Periodontology shows that people with gum disease are twice as likely to develop heart disease. Proper flossing, brushing, and regular hygiene visits can prevent gum disease from destroying your gums and teeth.
If we find that you have signs of gum disease, Dr. Rogers can alleviate your symptoms with non-surgical therapies. They include:
- Scaling - to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line
- Root Planing - to reduce rough areas on teeth roots
- Antibiotic Therapy - to battle infection
- Laser Treatment - to remove bacteria and promote gum reattachment
Symptoms of early gum disease are generally mild and even people with good oral hygiene are at risk. If your gums feel sore or tender, bleed when you brush, or you have chronic halitosis (bad breath) contact our Honesdale dental office.
Dr. Rogers prevents and treats gum disease for residents of Honesdale, Waymart, Narrowsburg, Hawley, and the NEPA area. Advanced cases that require a specialist or surgery will be referred to a trusted periodontist.
